Wizso Trial Cuts Toilet Flushing by 49% at Scottish Water Offices
In a bid to tackle the rising issue of water scarcity, the Hydro Nation Chair teamed up with Wizso and Scottish Water to run a groundbreaking trial at the Inverness Laboratory. The goal? To demonstrate how reducing unnecessary toilet flushing can significantly cut down on overall water use, all with the help of Wizso’s innovative solution.
Why Focus on Toilet Flushing?
Toilet flushing remains one of the largest contributors to indoor water use. According to Thames Water’s 2019–20 annual report, the average flush uses around 7.5 litres of clean, potable water. With most people flushing approximately seven times a day, this adds up to more than 50 litres of water per person just to remove 1.5 to 2 litres of urine.
This presents a huge opportunity for water saved through behaviour change and smart interventions.
The Trial
The trial took place across four toilets at the Inverness Laboratory. It began with a four-week baseline period to measure toilet flushing habits without Wizso. Following that, Wizso pellets were introduced, and data was collected over the next eight weeks.
The results were impressive. With Wizso in use, toilet flushes dropped by an average of 49%. Over the course of a year, that equates to approximately 5,040 litres of water saved across just four toilets.
When scaled up, the impact is even more striking. If 100 toilets adopted the same approach, the annual water saved could reach 135 cubic metres-the equivalent of a 15-metre swimming pool filled with clean drinking water.
Environmental and Economic Impact
Reducing toilet flushing not only lowers water use, but also delivers financial and environmental benefits. For commercial sites, this trial suggests potential annual savings of around £140 and a reduction of 40 kg in CO₂e emissions-all from using Wizso to minimise unnecessary flushing.
Scottish Water’s Perspective
“The Scottish Water Inverness Lab team had a great experience supporting the trial of Wizso. We saw changes in behaviours and nearly 50% reduction in water usage. It’s great to see it now rolling out further across Scottish Water.”
