Every August, Water Quality Month draws attention to one of the most important resources we have: clean, fresh water. It was established to educate people about the importance of protecting water supplies and to encourage practical action at home, at work and in our communities.

In 2026, the timing could not be more relevant. UK water quality remains among the highest in the world, with 99.97% of all drinking water samples passing regulatory standards, according to the Drinking Water Inspectorate's annual report published in July 2026. But beneath that reassuring headline, the picture is more complicated. Ageing infrastructure, emerging chemical contaminants, record demand and a summer of hosepipe bans have put the UK's water system under more pressure than at any point in a generation.

This Water Quality Month, we want to explain what is actually happening to the UK's water supply, why it matters right now, and what every household can do today to be part of the solution.

Clean water is not something we can take for granted. Water Quality Month exists because protecting it requires action from all of us, not just the water companies.

The State of UK Drinking Water in 2026

The good news first. The UK has some of the safest drinking water in the world. The Drinking Water Inspectorate tested more than 3.5 million water quality samples in 2025 and 99.97% of them met the required standards. For context, that means UK tap water ranks alongside the very best in the world.

But the DWI's chief inspector was equally clear in his 2026 report that maintaining those standards will require significant and sustained investment. Several challenges are placing growing strain on the system.

Ageing infrastructure

A significant portion of the UK's water infrastructure dates back decades or longer. In 2025, 47 water quality events were attributed directly to poor asset health or plant failure, including 30 microbiological contamination events and 17 structural failures. In late 2025, a treatment failure at Pembury in Kent left up to 60,000 consumers without supply and triggered a boil water notice. These incidents are not isolated. They are symptoms of a system that needs investment.

PFAS and emerging contaminants

One of the most significant long-term concerns in UK water quality is the presence of PFAS, often called 'forever chemicals' because they do not break down in the environment. In February 2026, the UK government published its first national PFAS strategy, formally acknowledging the scale of the problem for the first time. Statutory drinking water limits for PFAS are currently under consideration. Existing compliance frameworks do not yet fully capture PFAS exposure, which means that even water passing all current regulatory tests may contain these substances above World Health Organisation guidelines.

Regional variation

Water quality varies considerably across the UK. Ipswich currently has the hardest tap water in England at around 435mg per litre of calcium carbonate, while Glasgow has the softest at approximately 16mg per litre. Lead remains a concern in properties built before 1970, where lead pipes may still be in use, even in supply zones that pass all compliance tests. There are currently 398 active improvement notices tracked across UK water companies, reflecting the scale of work still required.

Hosepipe bans and supply pressure

Summer 2026 has seen hosepipe bans introduced by multiple water companies across England, including Thames Water, affecting approximately 10 million customers in London and the Thames Valley. This reflects a broader truth: parts of England are already experiencing the early stages of water stress, and projections suggest this will worsen without meaningful change to how we use and protect our water.

The Drinking Water Inspectorate confirmed 99.97% compliance in 2025, but the chief inspector warned that ageing assets and emerging contaminants represent the most significant long-term risks to that record.

The Demand Side of the Problem

Water quality and water quantity are connected. The more we use, the harder the system works to treat, pump and distribute water to our homes. The more pressure on reservoirs and treatment works, the greater the risk of the quality failures we have seen in 2025 and 2026.

According to the Consumer Council for Water, the average person in England uses approximately 140 litres of water per day. That is above the UK government's own 2040 target of 130 litres per person per day, and significantly higher than the average in comparable European countries such as Germany and the Netherlands, where average daily use is around 125 litres per person.

Toilets and showers together account for more than half of all household water use. Within that, toilet flushing is one of the largest and most overlooked sources of avoidable waste. The average person flushes the toilet five times a day, using between five and nine litres per flush depending on the age of the cistern. For a family of four, that is over 100 litres of drinking water flushed away every single day for no hygiene reason at all when used for a number one.

The UK government has set a target of reducing per capita water use to 130 litres per person per day by 2040. Reaching that target requires meaningful change in household behaviour, particularly around the bathroom. Water Quality Month is an opportunity to start.


What You Can Do to Protect Water Quality and Supply at Home

Protecting water quality is not just a job for water companies and regulators. Individual households make a significant difference. Here are the most impactful actions you can take this Water Quality Month.

1. Never pour chemicals, medicines or cooking oils down the drain

Household chemicals, unused medicines, fats and oils that enter the drainage system all contribute to water quality problems downstream. They can overwhelm treatment processes and, in some cases, pass through to rivers and groundwater. Dispose of medicines through your pharmacist and fats and oils in your household waste rather than the kitchen sink.

2. Check your home for lead pipes

If your home was built before 1970, there is a meaningful chance that your internal pipework includes lead. Even where supply zone compliance tests pass, lead from internal pipes can leach into tap water, particularly in areas with soft water. Your water company can advise on testing and on the government's lead pipe replacement schemes.

3. Fix leaks quickly

A leaking toilet cistern can waste between 200 and 400 litres of water every single day, entirely silently. A dripping tap wastes around 5,500 litres a year. Both increase the demand on water treatment and supply infrastructure unnecessarily. Both are also straightforward and inexpensive to fix.

4. Be water meter aware

Switching to a water meter is free from all UK water companies. If your household uses less water than average for your property size, a meter can significantly reduce your bill and gives you real data on your usage. Awareness of consumption is the first step towards reducing it.

5. Reduce unnecessary toilet flushing

This is the single most impactful change most UK households can make to their water use. Every flush after a number one sends between five and nine litres of treated drinking water straight down the drain.
