Water Conservation for a Sustainable Future: How the United Nations' SDG 6 Inspires Action in 2025

Out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations, each plays a vital role in shaping a better, more sustainable world. Among them, Goal 6 stands out as essential for life: ensuring the availability and sustainable water management and sanitation for all.

As water becomes increasingly threatened by climate change and population growth, the importance of water conservation cannot be overstated. This article explores how SDG 6 drives global action in 2025 and highlights practical steps we can all take to combat water scarcity and protect this vital resource.

What Is SDG 6?

Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to "ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all" by 2030. Access to safe drinking water, hygiene, and sanitation is a human right, yet billions of people still lack these basic services. Without accelerated action, this gap will persist far beyond the 2030 target.

Key Targets of SDG 6

To support global water conservation and sustainability, SDG 6 includes the following key targets:

  • Safe and Affordable Drinking Water: Universal and equitable access to safe drinking water.

  • Sanitation and Hygiene: Adequate sanitation services and hygiene, especially for women, girls, and vulnerable populations.

  • Water Quality: Reduction of pollution and harmful discharges to improve freshwater quality.

  • Water Use Efficiency: Substantial improvements in how water is used across sectors to tackle water scarcity.

  • Integrated Water Management: Coordinated, cooperative water governance across national and regional levels.

  • Ecosystem Protection: Safeguarding and restoring water-related ecosystems such as wetlands, rivers, lakes, and aquifers.

Why Water Conservation Matters in 2025

Despite global awareness, water scarcity continues to worsen. Climate change, urbanisation, and poor infrastructure contribute to depleted supplies and recurring droughts. By 2050, it's estimated that at least one in four people will suffer frequent water shortages.

That’s why water conservation must be a central focus in 2025. It's not just a government responsibility - individuals and communities play a crucial role. Every drop saved contributes to a more sustainable water future.

A Simple Way to Conserve: Rethinking Toilet Flushing

One everyday behaviour that has a huge impact on water use is toilet flushing. On average, each flush uses 7.5 litres of clean, drinkable water, water that’s wasted when flushing for just a small amount of urine.

A practical, user-friendly solution comes from Wizso, which helps people change their flushing habits. Instead of flushing every time, users can drop a Wizso pellet into the bowl after a number one.

This single behavioural change can result in thousands of litres of water saved annually per person, making a meaningful contribution to water conservation and the goals of SDG 6.
